In this article, we are going to cover the basic VPN setup process on an AsusWRT router so that it can connect directly to ProtonVPN servers.
First, you will have to access your Asus router control panel. By default, the address for it is 192.168.1.1. Please take this address and enter it into the address bar on your internet browser. You should see something like this:
If you have not changed the login credentials yet, the default login is: admin (username); admin (password)
Note: If you have pre-configured these credentials when setting up your router, you will have to enter them to access the router control panel.
When you access the router control panel, navigate to the bottom-left to find the “VPN” section and click on it.
In the next window, click on “VPN Client” section and then click on “Add profile“.
In order to finalize the AsusWRT router VPN setup, you’ll need to download your desired server configuration files. Log in to your ProtonVPN account and click the Downloads category. You can download the desired configuration files by selecting the Router option.
Now, in the following window on your Asus router, select OpenVPN and enter the following:
Description – It can be any text that you wish, for instance, “ProtonVPN”.

Username and Password – Here you will have to enter your OpenVPN credentials that you can locate on your Account page.
After you’ve filled everything, click on “Choose File“.
You will have to navigate to the location where you have downloaded the VPN configuration files and select one of them.
After selecting the server config file and clicking on “Open“, click on the “Upload” button to import the configuration file on this VPN profile in your AsusWRT router. You should see a Complete notification.
Click “OK” to accept.

To configure your DNS, use the the left menu bar, titled Advanced Settings, and navigate to WAN, and then WAN DNS Settings.
If you are using a UDP config file, then the DNS settings should look like this:
Connect to DNS Server automatically: No DNS Server 1: 10.8.8.1 DNS Server 2: blank
If you are using a TCP config file, then the DNS settings should look like this:
Connect to DNS Server automatically: No DNS Server 1: 10.7.7.1 DNS Server 2: blank
NOTE: If you are user of the ProtonVPN Free plan, you need to use the server config files for our free servers. If you are using UDP, you should enter 10.8.0.1 for DNS Server 1. If you are using TCP, you should enter 10.7.0.1 for DNS Server 1.

Once you have completed the DNS configuration, you are ready to connect to a ProtonVPN server and begin browsing.
Return to the VPN Client page and click the “Activate” button to establish a VPN connection.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I figured it couldn't hurt to try. I've to an Asus RT-AC66R that offers the ability to configure an OpenVPN server on it. I enabled it with all of the default settings, with the exception of changing UDP over to TCP. When I try to connect, I'm currently trying to connect from a Mac using Tunnelblick, it fails to connect with the following errors:
